Firearms Training

Applicants for a new Queensland Firearms Licence must have successfully completed an approved course in Firearm Safety. Your firearm’s Licence application must be lodged within 12 months of completion of the course. The courses we offer meet the requirement for a Queensland Firearms Licence.

Applicants for a Queensland Firearms Licence must demonstrate a Genuine Reason and a Genuine Need to own firearms. Primary Producers and Owners of property larger than 20 hectares, and Recreational Hunters with written permission from a suitable property owner may qualify for a Licence.

Current Membership of the Sporting Shooters Association of Australia, a.k.a. SSAA, currently meets the Genuine Reason and Genuine Needs requirements for a Queensland Firearms Licence. Membership offers target shooting as a sport, and recreational hunting opportunities, and Licences are currently endorsed for Club and recreational hunting.

Members receive 11 monthly magazines per year as well as twenty million dollars of liability insurance. Membership details are available at www.ssaa.org.au

At SSAA Bundaberg we conduct regular courses for Category A & B and Category H firearms. We are also able to provide firearms safety training for other Categories including C and D upon request. Each Category of licence has a specific Elective that must be completed. A typical Firearm’s Safety Course comprises Section 1 and the Elective for Category A & B or Category H firearms.

You will also need a USI (Unique Student Identifier). A USI is your individual education number for life. It also gives you an online record of your vocational education and training (VET) undertaken in Australia. You cannot receive a Statement of Attainment for the Safety Course without a USI. A USI is free and obtainable at www.usi.gov.au Please bring a copy of your USI with you.

Course content

The course(s) deal with knowledge, attitude and behaviour needed to use a firearm safely, responsibly and legally.

  • Some of the key components include:
  • Legal requirements for owning a firearm,
  • The technology of firearms and ammunition,
  • Different types of firearm,
  • Safe handling and safe use of firearms,
  • Legal and social responsibilities of shooters, and
  • Practical shooting here you demonstrate that you are competent in handling a firearm safely.

Selecting your course

Please be aware of the category you wish to book:

  • Category A & B = Longarms / Rifle
  • Category H = Handguns / Pistol

All courses are conducted at the SSAA Bundaberg Pistol Range (Range 2).  Please see the calendar below for exact dates.

Courses take approximately eight (8) hours to complete. You will need to bring lunch, as well as a pen, and hearing and eye protection, e.g., ear plugs of muffs, and glasses/safety glasses.

Please Note- cancellations within 24 hours of the course will incur a minimum $50 cancellation fee.

Cancellation / Non attendance

Our courses are in high demand and are run at full capacity. We have a 24 hour cancellation policy to allow us time to re allocate our attendees. Any cancellations that occur 24 hours or more before the scheduled course will be refunded, less a small fee we incur. If you cancel within 24 hours of your scheduled course this will result in a cancelled booking fee being applied which will be a minimum of $50.

We are unable to transfer your booking to an alternative date, however, we can cancel your reservation and you can re-book via our website.

If you fail to attend your selected course this will also result in a cancelled booking fee being applied which will be a minimum of $50.
